Hi

I have purcased a rather overpowered Bayliner 180.It has a 1987 Evinrude 225 bolted to the transom:eek:.Anyway, the boat has some issues that probably is because the motor is much heavier than the boat can handle.First of all it raises the bow quite extremely before going into plane, this also happens when I go off throttle to slow the boat down.I also only hit aprox 4500 rpm at WOT.The engine is rated to 5-6000 rpm.A buddy of mine told me that many of these issues could be because I run the wrong propeller. The propeller is a Raker 14,5x22.Does this seem like the correct one or do you guys have any ideas?Talked to a propeller dealer the other day and he suggested getting a 15-1/4 x 19.

Sounds like you described your issue to a T in the first line. You have the wrong engine for that boat. Downsize the engine or upsize the boat.

What is the boat rated for? It looks very overpowered to me and sounds like there is more than one issue going on. You probably really need a different motor more than a different prop, but on you set up where is the motor mounted? How high is the AV plate in relation with the bottom of the keel? Is the motor a 20 or 25 in shaft? Smart tabs could help keep the bow lower, but I would expect a 225hp motor rev higher than 4500rpm on a 18 foot boat.

Are you trimming in all the way for the hole shot? With that much power, (assuming the engine is running well) The boat should "bounce" twice and be on plane at about 45 MPH Then as you feed in up trim, the speed should climb to white knuckle scary.

Boat came with a 90 I'll bet its rated for a 90.The I/O came with a 130.
You should be having trouble propping to keep it under the max rpm.
You may want to confirm your runnuing on all cylinders.
The Force 90 is 255 lbs the Evinrude could be as much as 480.
Unless the transom was rebuilt I bet you can find it is starting to show
evidence of being over powered. I wouldn't be surprised with Bayliners history you probably have other hull issues either from from abusae over the years or
from that weight hanging off the back. You may want check the bottom for any irregularities. There could also be legal issues if anyone was to get hurt .

Lars, I show a gear ratio of 1.86:1 please check that for me. If that is correct you should be running an 18" pitch prop, If I were you I would be running Mobster tabs on the boat. Everybody is right about overpowering and steele has a very valid point on checking the transom very good for problems. You could lose your motor or worse.

Maybe there's 500lbs of wet foam he's gotta push as well.

I have now removed and sold the 225.Bought a 1995 model 130hp Yamaha v4 today.does this sound better?Anyway.I cant find any cracks anywhere and the plywood inside the transom is bone dry.The entire boat looks wery good actually, inside and out.

It sound much better, I am not sure what you boat is rated for but that has to be a lot closer. Also is a great motor if maintained.

it is rated to 90hp so I dont think 130 is so bad.As far as I know the 130hp yamaha is the exact same motor as the 115 but with different carbs.Cant wait to get it mounted.wonder how much lighter the Yamaha is compared to the evinrude.Think the evinrude weights in at 205kg aprox.
