Prop clicks in Neutral...90TLRC

I randomly was spinning my prop by hand the other day on my 2004 yamaha 90tlrc and notice that it "clicks" when its spun in either direction. I pulled the lower unit off, and attempted to adjust it by hand. When I shift the lower unit into neutral there is a sweet spot that I can hold the shaft in and the prop will spin freely, however, as soon as i release the shifter shaft it moves back to the "un-sweet" spot of neutral and clicks again. Is there someway I can adjust this after I install the lower unit. The shift shaft (the spline thing in the lower unit) just has to be turned just a hair and the prop spins freely.

Re: Prop clicks in Neutral...shift rod adjustment?

Re: Prop clicks in Neutral...shift rod adjustment?

I know that you can adjust the shift linkage rod adjustment in the engine compartment when you have these problems, but I thought since this problem was occurring with the lower unit off, it might be a specific lower unit problem. nonetheless, I adjusted the linkage adjuster until the prop spun freely while in neutral. I had to push it back more towards reverse. Now, the shift lever at the control box feels like it has 5 positions (2 extra). When I shift from neutral into forward, the shift handle "clicks" into first, then there is another shift after that point when in continue to push the handle forward. Same goes for reverse. Its like the gears shifting and the cables pulling on the carbs aren't in sync. Is this something that is ok, and now I need to adjust them? Or, did I fix the symptom of one problem only to screw something else up?

Also, when I adjusted the shift rod thing, the arrows were matched up to begin with. After I adjusted it, the arrows were way off. In fact, if I were to move it any further back the shift cable rods in the engine compartment would probably bend when I shift into reverse.

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe I should just set it back the way it was and live with the clicks? The motor was running great, but it did seem like there was a little bit of a problem shifting into reverse sometimes.

If you would put your modle number in the title where people will see it I bet Robert Graham or someone else would give you some input on how their 90tlr acts. A lot of people will look for questions about the motors they have.

Re: Prop clicks in Neutral...90TLRC

Thanks for the response. I swung by a outboard repair shop today that wasn't too busy and got them to look at it. Mechanic basically said there is some slack in the steering cables somewhere, probably worn out bushing or something in the control box. We adjusted it so that there wasn't too much clicking of the prop, and he said just live with it like that until i can replace control box or steering cables. Seems like there ought to be a way i can replace the bushings or whatever instead of replacing the whole thing...
