I have a older Sea King motor 5 HP built in 1963. The only thing that holds the prop on the shaft is a small 3/16 dia shear pin and a cotter key. A rubber prop cone then slides over the the whole works. If the prop cone comes off the shear pin falls out. Anyone know of a better system for this motor? Or is this as good as it gets. Thanks in advance.

Re: Prop Cone

As long at the rubber isn't rotten, it does unbelievably well at holding it all together. To get along without...cut some brass shaft of appropriate diameter just a bit long and pien over each end once it's in place. I have a similar setup, but the cone is plastic. I carry a spare prop and All of the hardware including a cone. On yours, the cone just holds the shear pin in. The cotter pin is there to keep the prop on the shaft if the key shears.

Part of carrying an extra prop is also carrying a full set of prop hardware. If you lose a prop, you lose all the hardware and just a spare prop isn't going to help much. Then there's the ominous kerplunk when you're trying to hang over the back and change a damaged prop...often accompanied by a loud "S#$T!". :D

Re: Prop Cone

Thanks for the info, mine is rubber and has gone bad from age and setting out in the sun for 3 years. I have not been able to locate a replacement cone extra parts or prop yet. Figured brass pin would work, thought someone might know of after market replacement. Thanks again for the info. This is a great site and I have gotten lots of good advice.

alderman, if you've got enuff prop shaft, you can drill a 1/8" hole through cone and shaft and secure with a S.S. cotter key. Thats how its done on a "62" 28hp rude that I have.

Good luck.
