prop damage

I have a 2000 ebbtide 19' 4.3l motor my ? is on the prop the ring on the outside came off does it matter or not? 23 pitch mercruiser alpha 1 I think I hit all details, but I dont think piece matters just wanna be sure. sorry about the typing and wording.<br /><br />Dan

I had that happen on my OMC out drive. It made the prop cavitate so it was acting like the hub was slipping. Replaced the ring and voila! No more slipping.

OMC call it a "defuser ring" and Merc call it a "convergence ring". Or is it the other way round, anyway it's there to stop exhaust gases being sucked back into the low pressure side of the prop blades, hence causing 'cavitation'.
