I am TDY right now so no boat in front of me. I need the max prop diameter for my motor. There are no markings on my current prop except what someone etched "Protester 22". My motor is 1985 Mercury Black Max 150. SN#6635559. I am looking at buying a 48 11074 A40 23p and wanted to make sure it will fit. Thanks!!

Hope to have you home soon, Eric! Hey, I don't have the P/N in front of me but diameter is usually a result of blade design and intended use so I don't know the purpose you will be using your boat for so if you could provide type of boat and maybe a little bit of what you are wanting boat to perform like and/or change and maybe we can give ya a better idea of the direction you need to look. I do know the Protester is in the high-performance category so I'm guessing you may be talking Bassboat?? Prop choice will be more critical if that's the case.

You are correct it is a bass boat. The boat is a 18 1/2 ft 1985 Ranger 370V. Info I found puts the hull at 1190 ibs. I am running a 5 inch set back jack plate on her. The altitude here is 509 ft. I'm looking for top speed. Last I took it out it was running 51 mph gps @ 6000 rpms. The hub spun later that day. If I can remember correctly there is a sticker on the back of the lower unit that says 14. Thanks.

OK, That's a Laser II prop. If you're serious about speed and want best performance from a merc prop, a Tempest or Fury will provide what you are looking for in the Merc line-up. There are some other options though. The Ranger hull you're running doesn't have much natural bow-lift and most Rangers require a serious bow-lifter to get the most from that hull. One option will be a Turbo Lightning. Another possible option is the Solas Scorpion, which I have tested and with some set-up tuning, the Scorpion will flat smoke a tempest if set up correctly and due to blade design, it requires 1" less pitch than equivalent Merc props. The Laser II is for very light, high HP boats-that's where it does it's best work. I think you would be cutting yourself short with a Laser II on a Ranger. Quicksilver has their equivalent props to the Merc Line in different names, although built in the same mold. As long as you have a water pressure gauge, you can get that engine at maximum height and really gain some speed with a high quality SS.

EDIT: Blade diameter is going to be only a function of blade design. when we get into this class of prop, seldom do they change diameter with pitch in the same model and the higher the diameter props can be run at higher engine heights-a plus when maximizing set-up.

Thank you the info. A local guy told me to look at the Laser II as it performed well with Mercs. I guess he didn't consider that Merc is attached to a Ranger. Thanks again.

The Laser is a good, all-around SS prop, just not best suited to a ranger with a jackplate. They work pretty good on some of the light-weight hulls with some good bow-lifting hulls but there are better choices when looking for max speed on a Ranger.
