I have a steel prop with some good size dings and jagged edges from hitting things in my 'Noob' era. The prop is not ablitherated, but i have read that any thing other than perfect affects performance. Can i put a grinder to the blades and clean up them edges and put it in a vice. How finesse is this detail please?

Re: Prop dings

I had a prop for a 30hp that was dinged up, so I ground out the chips and dings until it looked good then made a stencilboard pattern of that blade, traced it on the other blades and ground them down so they all ended up the same size and shape. Worked great and no vibration and used for 2 seasons. Sprung for a new one this season but still carry that as a spare.

no you probally need to buy a new one or have it professorially re done. its the weight and the contor of the blade if you have dings in it time for a new one or getting that one redone at a marine shop. i had a chip in my and was told if i didn't get a new one or that one fix i would be paying for a new out board in a month. i had a chip not a ding so. my advise go with a new one it will save your more and better perfomance

Re: Prop dings

Depending on size it's usually about $100 to have one fixed the right way. Think about driving your car with an unbalanced tire. You may be able to get away with the grinder, but if not, you wont know until more damage is already done to your motor.

Re: Prop dings

Running a unbalanced dinged up prop can cause seal and bearing problems in the gearcase.
How quickly and how severe would depend on how bad the prop is and how heavy the use.
A ran a fairly severely damaged prop for 2 summers weekends skiing etc with no damage to this point on a 88 erude 50.Had the prop repaired some years ago.A steel prop would likely cause problems a little quicker than an al. prop it is heavier.

Yep get it repaired by a prop shop. Just part of the overall expense and prop dings unfortunatly don't seem to have much to do with being a noob.
