Hello all,
First post after lurking for several weeks. Got a new to me boat and after several weeks of cleanup, new gauges, radio system, carpet, rubbing compound, wax, and graphics, my brother and I took it out for the first time yeterday since purchase in March. ran great and overall impresss with it except two issues: old pitot tube was evidently still hooked up to lower unit as our first run had a water hose on my legs! Plugged iton lake but any ideas on how to disconnect? I have new pitot probe installed for my new gauges. Second question is I am turning too many revs. I thought so on test drive but thought tach or speedo were maybe off and decided to wait until new gauges intalled to recheck. So here are my specs:
Boat: 1996 stingray 606zp (now 200 or 205) 20 ft bow rider roughly 2700 lbs
Engine: 1996 4.3L mercruiser with alpha I gen II 1.81 ratio. Has unknown whale tale Motor has had carb rebuilt since I got it and adjusted by boat mechanic, all fluids changed and new cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Runs great, idles at 700 rpm, starts within 2-3 revelations with 3 shots of prime
Test condition - 74 deg, calm water, 2 people, full gas, gps inboard to verify speeds
Prop-quicksilver 14 or 14.5" x 19" stainless three blade kinds chewed up leading edge of blades
Test results: basically same as before new gauges
Wot-5200-5250 fully trimmed up
Speedo-48 mph, gps-47
Midrange 4200 rpm speedo 40 gps 39
Low midrange 3500 rpm speedo 34 gps 32
Planes out really quick trimmed down. Full turns at slow speed and high power can ventilate or blow out prop such as turning back to get downed tuber
Question is I have researched here extensively and whle a hi5 seems a likely candidate, it's out of the budget for now. Looking at a solas 21" 4 blade as a mercury diamond 4 maybe in 20". Alternate thought is a 19" solas four blade as it might drop me to 5000 which is still a little high lightly loaded but mint be right on the money with lots of teens on board. Sorry for such a long post and I hope I got all the info needed
My needs are pulling teenage kidoson tubes, knee boards, wake boards. Top end isn't all that critical but I don't want to be a slug either. Hole shot and mid rpm cruise are my needs

Forgot. I did verify tach is set to 6 cyl position as was old one. Engine is 190 hp carb.

Re: Prop for my new to me Stingray!

Or I also believe you'll maintain your great holeshot, gain better handling, and be very close to your ideal RPMs with a 19" stainless Solas Titan or Rubex HR4 4 blade, or a 20" Stilletto 4 blade. Realize these 3 things: 1. Going to 4 blade of same pitch as your current will usually drop your RPMS. 2. Both of those props will have more cupping than your current prop, which will drop your RPMS even more. 3. Going from slightly chewed up edges to clean edges will drop your RPMS yet more.

So I believe the trifecta combination will get you down into the high 4000's, which is right where you wanna be...

And for the budget minded, you could also take your current prop to a prop shop, and for $150-ish I bet you could have it fixed up good as new and have them add 1" of pitch at the same time...

I'm a fellow Stingray owner similar to yours but different...I have a 1999 200LX with a 5.0L. I have found this hull responds to 4 blade VERY nicely...I SOOOO much prefer the 4 blade over my previous factory 3 blade...holeshot, turning, torque steer, porpoising, and shockingly even top speed...ALL of those aspects improved a bit after I added a blade, even though my previous 3 blade (aluminum) prop was correct for the boat and ran good RPMs.
