Here goes. I have a 1984 aq125a/270 and lost the prop, and cone, spacer, bolt, etc....Prop fit fine but was damaged, had it repaired and when re-installing didn't pay any mind that locking washer would no longer seat on the splines, so all my fault. 3 questions though:

1. Had a 14x17 michigan wheel aluminum prop. Got 43-4400 WOT with it. Want over 4500 rpm (closer to 5k the better) According to prop guide, decreasing 2 inches pitch adds 3-400 rpm. If I switch to a 4 blade, I will get better pulling and skiiing power, solas has a 15 inch, so in my head, (decrease pitch 1 inch going from 3 to 4 blade) I will still be getting 150 to 200 more rpm from a 14x15 - 4 blade.

Does that make sense to anyone? Any opinions?

2. Volvo outdrive manual isn't clear, Clymers has 2 types of type 2 prop setups, one with a nylon washer, locking washer, spacer, cone and nut, other is without the nylon washer and spacer. From what I see on Sierra Marine, they sell a cone for a 270 but no spacer. Does the cone have the cutouts for the locking washer tabs? I will be calling them tomorrow.

3. Is their a marine lock-tite?

Thanks,

John:)

Sorry I can't help with #1.

As for #2, the Sierra Marine cone does not have the cutouts. If you buy that cone you will also need the spacer, which does have the cutouts. The spacer attaches to the bottom of the new style cone and it then becomes one piece that you screw on and off when you change props. There are used old style cones for sale on eBay from time to time.

More - from what I can tell ( and after talking to an old parts guy at an old marina). The spacer is to attach a short hub prop on a long hub. When using a short hub prop on a short hub (the 4.7 inch), no locking washer is required, just torque accordingly and then lock with locking nut. He also recommended blue lock-tite. Could that be right? Do I need nylon washer?

I am not referencing the original short hub, I am discussing the one with the locking nut that screws through the center.

Has anyone ever drilled through the hub and safety wired the cone? (not what I want to do though)

Would lock-tite be enough?
