Would appreciate any advice on changing the stock alum. prop on my, I believe to be, 1995 Yamaha 40 hp PLRT. Would like to change to stainless. The motor is on an 18 ft. pontoon boat. This would be for just general cruising with two or three people aboard. Need advice on diameter & pitch, or anything else. Thanks in advance.

What prop do you have now and does it turn the correct rpms with an average load?

It's an alum. prop.,sold new with the motor. It has a chunk chipped out of it. Thought I would replace with a stainless prop. Unsure what diameter and pitch to choose. Do not have a tach. to check rpm's. Thanks.

No I don't. Can't find any numbers on the prop. The dealer was no help. The boat was performing o.k. considering the low h.p. on a 18ft. pontoon boat. Just looking for a good all around stainless prop for cruising. Hoping someone will suggest diameter & pitch. Thanks.

Why waste the $ on stainless for a pontoon?
You could get 2 or 3 aluminum props for the same price.

Have you removed the old prop? Sometimes the numbers are inside the housing.

Otherwise, take it to a prop repair shop and have it fixed as a spare and ask them to id the pitch for you. You should be able to measure it to get the diameter.

Thank you for the advice, will do just that. For some reason I thought I should run out and buy a stainless prop., with a special pitch, and somehow this boat will set some kind of speed record.

Re: Prop. for Yamaha 40 hp

The performance advantages of a stainless are lost on the pontoon. You are still pushing a barge thru the water. You could double the hp of your motor, and probably only pick up 30% in speed.

Have fun.
