I need to know some information on prop guards. I work at a marine and one of our customers are interested in a prop guard. The only thing that I know is I seen pictures of them and that is it. I guess the biggest 2 questions.
Do they really work or is it a waste of money?

Do they effect the performance of your boat and how? Them are the only questions I have and hopefully someone out there has one of these or knows someone who does that can help me.

Thank you for your help!
Nick

Re: Prop Guards

The skeg guard does not effect performance. It can be used to replace the skeg after its been broken off. Check this link out.... Skeg Guard

Re: Prop Guards

I've tried one.

It's like other protection... it tends to ruin the fun

If you're after top performance it's a no-go. If you want the ultimate protection and doesn't care too much about drag and resistance, it's OK.

nickster,

If you are just looking for protection from the bottom, check out the Macs River Runner available at: www.cabelas.com

I installed one on my brothers pontoon (Merc. 75 hp.) and it did not effect performance. If you can use pontoon and performance in the same sentence. :D

Re: Prop Guards

don't have one, but i checked them out awhile back since i'll probably get one for my little river boat later. from what i found, and others told me (you could do a search on this topic for older posts)

-they do cause drag, so are best used for pontoons, tugboats, situations where speed is not important, but in keeping the lower unit intact, like rocky river areas, etc

-they do give more fuel economy, thrust, and easier manueverability (great for barges, pontoons)
(i think the best savings are for speeds under 50mph in some stats i saw - due to drag. the gain in thrust & fuel savings are for the tube type [name?] propguard, not the cage type)

-they are a great safety feature, and have strong support by activists.

(i was looking at the combo unit with prop & skeg guard - you can also get it with the dolfin)
