 i have a 1986 renken w/ a 4.3 l omc w/ cobra outdrive. i am trying to get it running. the issue i am having is the throttle is in neutral, but when i go to start it the prop turns as if it is in drive. i can't figure it out. there seems to be an electrical problem, when i turn the key all electronics work but nothing with motor, i can put a screwdriver across starter contacts and it tries to turn ober, i am just confused. all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: prop issue

Its in gear, there's a safety switch that won't let it start when in gear. Either move the throttle handle into the neutral position and lock it out of gear to give it some throttle, or adjust the cable.

I have the throttle in neutral, would you happen to know where the safety switch is located?

I don't know where the safety lockout is on your rig, but see if you can turn the prop by hand when the lever appears to be in neutral. Then move the lever back and forth to see where the gears engage by spinning the prop.

The prop should easily spin by hand in neutral and will not turn when in gear.

Re: prop issue

Usually the neutral safety switch in right in the throttle controls It is just a little limit switch. But like the other guy said. You can tell if it is in neutral by spinning the prop by hand. It is very dangerous if the motor will start in gear. especially if you have swimmers in the water.
