prop moves back and forth

Hey all.. So thought I would check while I'm here. I have an 89 force 150. I went to merc dealer last summer to get a new prop and they were able to find me an aftermarket one from somewhere. It came with the hub kit and spacer but when I put the spacer in the prop wouldn't turn freely. With the spacer out the prop slides back and forth a bit. Is this a big problem? Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

Re: prop moves back and forth

Does it slide back and forth on the shaft or does the whole shaft move back and forth. Push forward on the prop and see if a gap opens up between the rear washer and the back of the prop hub. A certain amount of prop shaft play is normal but if the prop itself is sliding back and forth on the shaft that is not good. It will create added torque and stress to the gears in your drive system while shifting in and out of gear forward and reverse. Something would break eventually

Did you replace the thrust washer on the shaft before installing the new prop? It is the one just in front of the prop in the photo but it goes on the shaft BEFORE the prop is installed. Often, the thrust washer will get stuck in the old prop and come off with it. Then the unknowing newbie simply doesn't know it is supposed to be there. Put on the new prop and it will rub againt the gearcase.

Also, having used the old style rubber bushed props and buying a newer style with the replaceable hub, you may use a different thrust washer with it; I did with the one I bought. Like Frank said, the prop shaft moves in and out slightly and if you rotate the prop cw in F gear with forward pressure on the shaft, you will notice it move in and out slightly as you rotate it. That is the shift dog gliding over the F gear overrun clutch and is normal. Prop moving on the shaft is not.
