Prop not working NEED HELP QUICK

ok my luck cannot get any better, i am selling my pontoon and a guy is coming tommorow to look at it!
i cranks it and ran it with the mickey mouse ears and forward and reverse worked fine, then i killed it and cranked it again and all of a sudden forward and reverse doesnt work at all and i can hear like a dinging noise while it idles. i turn the engine off and put it in reverse or forward and sping the prop clockwise or counter and i can hear like a rachet noise coming from behind the propeller? does anyone know what is going on?
2002 mercury 40 hp 2 stroke by the way
i need help fast cause i am about to sell it

My only thought is the cables have come loose or perhaps have broken.
Un hook the cable and see if it will shift by hand.
