I posted this in the prop section but did not get any bites, so I thought I would try it here.

What is the recommended prop nut torque for a 1987 Johnson 110hp?

My manual says minimum is 10ft/lb, what is the max?

It has a plastic/composite washer between the castle nut and the prop.

Also, can the cotter pin be reused? It has never been removed before

Thanks.

The factory specifies 70-80 lbs on the prop nut. Problem will be when you try to put the cotter key in, between the castle nut prongs. If it won't fit, the factory says to tighten the castle nut more till the cotter key will go through. It also says to use a block of wood to wedge the prop against when torquing. You don't want any slack (looseness) at all in the way the prop fits on the shaft. If the cotter key appears in good condition, reuse it.

The prop nut torque on your mtr is 10 to 12 Ft lbs and no more seeing you have the nylon washer under it. You can use the cotter pin over if you want but new cotter pins are cheaper than props. The 70 ft lb spec is for the bigger V-6 mtrs.

Boobie is correct on the torque for the V4, my response was for a V6, sorry.

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, I posted my torque question AFTER I had already installed the prop.

Because it only specified a minimum, I figured I'd go a little tighter, so I torqued the nut to 18-20lb/ft.

Do you think this will cause any problems with the nylon washer?

The difference between 12lb/ft and 20lb/ft is about a 1/2 turn on the wrench.

This is the first manual that I have ever seen that shows a minimum torque value, but no max value.

Since it uses a nylon washer that is breakable, it would make more sense to be concerned with the max instead of the minimum.

Should I be concerned with the torque on the nylon washer, or am I worrying too much?

Thanks.

If the nylon washer isn't crushed all to hell or broken, don't worry about it. I've seen these torqued way more than what you did and still didn't break. They looked kind of funny tho'.

Thanks for the reply.

The nylon washer looks just the same as it did before, I just wanted to make sure that I hadn't caused any problems.

I was hoping to get an actual max torque spec from someone on here who has a shop manual, that way I would know what torque would be too tight, and whether having it at 18-20lbs/ft would cause any problems.

Does anyone have a shop manual for the V4 that specifies the max torque?

I appreciate everyones help; however, from the past posts I've searched through, all replies have really just suggested to tighten by feel.

My 1976 70hp service manual does not give a torque setting for the prop. Instead it gives some sort of number of pounds that the prop itself can take under engine load.

Most of the time the prop nut is just snug. The cotter key keeps it in place.

First off, if you're going to keep on working on this mtr you should get an OEM shop manual. THE shop manual says, when installing prop, torque nut to 10 ft lbs. If cotter pin doesn't line up, keep tightening until nut and prop shaft line up which should be about 12 ft lbs and the install cotter pin. That's the best I can explain it. Hope this helps.

Thanks, the shop manual specs is what I am looking for.

So torque to 10lbs, then try to place pin in, if it does not line up, then continue turning to no more than 12lbs in order to get pin hole lined up.

I wonder why they wouldn't have put that in the owners manual instead of just having a minimum value without a max value?

I've got an OEM manual and it says it in mine.
