prop nut

1977 140 hp Johnson what should i torque the prop nut to ?? it worked itself loose someone forgot to put the cotter pin in...also isnt there supposed to be a washer between the nut and the prop itself ??

goes on in this order, thrust bushing 318841, prop, spacer 315810, nut 314503. cotter pin 314502.

Seloc says 70-80 ft lbs on the newer models with the same sized nut. Because of the heat and motion, they will work loose anyway, so the cotter pin is always critical. Grease the shaft and splines, and check often for fishing line behind the thrust bushing.

Pin is vital, there again so is the rest !!!
Use a waterproof grease.

Right, that's one of many places that I don't mind the extra cost of Triple Guard Grease; it stays in place in spite of the heat and motion.

Always use a Stainless Steel Cotter Pin!!!!!
