prop on shaft 1/4 play ?

2001 merc 225 i hit something and broke off approx 4in of skeg and did very minor damage to prop.i noticed this evening with the boat out of the water and in gear i can turn the prop about a qtr turn without the shaft moving. normal or not. if not do i need a hub kit? i was thinking of getting a spair prop anyway how hard is it to install this stuff myself. am going to bass pro shop fri. cha ching.

It sounds like you may have damaged the internal hub that is made of plastic.... That 1/4 turn is not normal...<br /><br />Yes a hub kit will fix this problem. <br />But first, pull the prop off and you will see how easy it is to remove the inner plastic hub... Just push it out from the rear of the prop towards the front using some kind of screw driver and gentle strikes from a hammer if it needs a little help...You will see how everything goes together.. But it sounds like it is toast, but might as well ispect and you will know for sure...

Yea, they or any marine dealer will have them... Pretty standard part that is designed to fail (called a spun hub) so your gears aren't also toasted when you hit something.

any prop suggestions for a triton tr21 w a merc opti 225 it has 24 pitch 3 blade tempest on it now, and seems to work ok i've only had the boat 1 month

Sounds like you are ok... <br /><br />Check your recommended WOT rpm in your owners manual... You want to end up at the high end of the range that they state for optimum set-up....
