i have a quick ? for all of you experts. i am looking at a 4 blade prop for my sea ray (21 pitch 3 blade OEM on 5.0l mercuriser alpha 1 stern) and have narrowed it down to two props. mercury quicksilver and solas amita. mercury wants twice as much for their prop as the solas prop. my understanding is that they are both vent - thru props. is the mercury that much better? is it a performance thing? better aluminum or something? mercury is telling me after market props don't vent nearly as well as the mercury's do. i have a hard time believing that though. thoughts? i'd like to buy and have before weekend so any quick help is greatly appreciated.

I can't speak to specifics on materials etc. but I would bet few Marine engine builders make their own props.I have noted plenty of successes with the Solas Amita 4 blade props.Usually good, predictable rersults.

I can tell you that if you hold a mercury prop in one hand and any other prop in your other hand, the mercury prop is much heavier.

I look at it this way, merc makes the motor and the merc engineers test this stuff and know what works best on their engines. Other prop companies want to sell you their props and by and large there good props, but if there is an issue between OEM and an aftermarket prop, I'd go with OEM. The OEM prop is backed by exstensive research and development done by the MFG.
