Prop Pitch Issues?

Hey everyone,
I have a 1991 17' Bass Tracker that has a 40hp Evinrude on the back. I just recently replaced the powerhead with a 48hp powerhead. (Bought the boat in bad repair). I put the same prop back on it...It was a 11 3/4 X 17. I had it out this weekend and finally got most of the bugs worked out. If I trim it up and give it all she's got it runs about 35mph (on GPS) Trouble is, it does this at 6000rpm or just a shade over that. All the WOT rpm range specs all say the same thing....4500-5500 rpms. I came home and started looking for props, thinking maybe 18 or 19 would do the trick. I only found 1 prop that had more pitch than 17 and it was a stainless one at the cost of $220. I am looking for aluminum (I plan on fishing the small rivers around here) and decided lower cost and softer metal along with the chance of hitting logs/stumps, etc. pretty much dictates the use of alum. Performance is nice, but not the most important thing. What do you guys suggest for me to do?

I was doing some more looking. A 12 X 17 wouldn't make that much difference would it? I can't imagine that 1/4 of an inch would help that much.

Re: Prop Pitch Issues?

6000 RPM won't hurt that motor although 5800 seems to be its sweet spot. Besides, should you be heavily loaded you will appreciate the prop you have now. You could have some additional cup added to your existing prop to pull off some revs. Check e-bay or Craigs List -- there should be lots of SS props out there in the 17 - 18P range. Don't worry so much about SS and prop strikes. If you hit something hard enough with any prop you will suffer damage.

Re: Prop Pitch Issues?

Ok...I will look into that. Thanks for the reply. I took it out today and trimmed it up a bit more and ended up with almost 6500 at a little over 35mph. I may just live with it and pay attention to what I am doing. (I wasn't looking at the tach when I had it to 6500) I may look into having the cup added. We'll see, still trying to get this motor to idle right, but that's another thread. Thanks again!
