Don't hear much about it on here but we're always talking about having one gearbox on our rigs and it has to cover hole, mid-cruising, and top end.
Don't overlook the palsey ports for down shifting. If you don't know what they are just look at the side of a prop that's ported and there will be one round or square hole for each blade near the front of the barrel.
What this does is lets the prop slip by ventilating via forced exhaust gasses blown over the blades. This allows the engine to rev up faster (like it had a lower pitched prop) and develop it's horsepower. Remember one of the elements of horsepower is rpm. So if you can get them up fast you get your horses fast and blast outta-da-hole.
Has little or nothing to do with the top end (cause they are sealed off by the slipstream) so you can prop to run and still get it on the water fast. BTDT
