Not sure but think i might have a prop issue. I have a 200hp johnson on a 20 foot f/s. I have had some carb and throttle problems at low speeds but never at WOT. I run a 14.5 by 24 raker prop. I have always run about 68 mph at 5500 rpm's. End of last season I was exactly that. This year i had a tune up and and carbs cleaned and a starting problem fixed. I also had my prop redone, had some nicks and have hit a few things in the past. First time out this year i could only get 60mph at 4900 rpm's. I went back to the shop and went over the engine and everything seemed fine, compression, spark, and carbs. Then i went back to prop shop and he said NO WAY it was the prop. But he did say the prop needed to have the nicks fixed, and rebent and had to be cupped some. {i believe cup is the end part of the blade on the prop}. Could he have cupped and or bent the prop too much to cause me to lose 600 rpm's. It would be crazy to just go out and buy a new prop just to check when i paid alot for this one and alot to have it "fixed". Not sure what to do to get my rpm's back. {sorry about the long type} thanks.

Re: prop problem?

Two things come to mind, one cylinder on engine not working for some reason. Extra weight in boat, maybe, water saturated foam. Chief ;)

Re: prop problem?

so you don't think it is the prop. I just did some reading on the web and im thinking now that the raker prop i have was not cupped. {did not know you could get both kinds}. Wondering if the prop guy just put the cup in it. just check for spark and timing and everything was firing. Not sure where to check for saturated foam, but i know the weight was about the same this time out.

Do you have any boating buddy's that have a similar set up. Ask nicely to borrow there prop. You hurt it you buy it. Some shops will let you try a prop if you leave a deposit.

Re: prop problem?

So youre saying he rebuilt the prop to Raker specs AND added cup? That will certianly add bite and cuase a loss of rpm. Why was the additional cup added?

BTW -- the numbers are off but as long as youre using the same instruments then youre comparing apples to apples. Right now we'd be just concerned with the loss of rpm. This is the same tach -- right?

The prop guy said the prop was bent and out of shape. he told me the cup was almost gone(not sure how that could of happened or if possible). I brought it back to him and he said it was fine, right where it should be. <br />What exactly do you mean by the numbers are off? Yes this is the same tach,
