Prop question

I was told that my lower unit is catching and releasing, and that its needs to be rebuilt or replaced. When on plain it would jump like the rpms were higher then lower etc, etc.

They told me i could get along til i decide what to do by switching to an aluminum prop and changing the gear lube. I dont want to just bandaid fix it but dont want to spend the money on a new lower unit if thats not really the problem.

Anyways, I'm rambling. the stainless prop was 13 3/8 x 17 , all they had in stock was a 14 x 17 alum. Will this be OK, its really close to hitting but doesnt if that makes a difference.

Re: Prop question

Any2Magoo, I responded to your post in the repair section. This is most likely not a problem with your lower unit. And even if it was...switching props most certainly would not help at all. Get your motor running right and then start playing with props.

Re: Prop question

What they are telling you, makes no sense.
If indeed the clutchdog is slipping, changing to an aluminum prop will change nothing.

So, a little clarification please.
You say the rpm are jumping.
Is there any clunking, or violent jerking going on when this happens?
Does it happen more under hard acceleration?

It may just be a spun prop hub, and not a worn clutchdog in the lower unit.

So we need to determine if the prop is slipping or the clutchdog is jumping out of gear.

No i dont feel any hard jerkin or hear any strange noise. Although when i give it hard throttle to get going sometimes there is a clunk, but just 1.
