I have a 1988 mercury 150, on my Bass Tracker 18ft fiberglass bass boat. I have a dinged up alum prop, so I am looking to replace it. I will be going stainless. I want something with a bit more top end, my rpm gauge does not work. What is a good size prop for this motor that keeps it in a safe rpm range and a better top speed.

If your rpm gauge (tach) does not work then some of the info we would need is missing. It's fairly cheep to have an aluminum prop rebuilt. Going stainless may not give you enough to make a difference. What is the current size prop you have now?

19 pitch Solas Titan 4 will get you in the mid to high 50's at 5800 ish with lots of bottom end. Their 19 pitch is set up like everyone elses 21 pitch.

Re: Prop question.

With a 19 pitch ss prop will I need to adjust the idle? Is there a way to tell what pitch I have now?

Re: Prop question.

Use the Mercury prop selector on their web site to see that they recommend a 21 pitch Laser II or Tempest Plus for max speed.

It's not recommended to try to prop a boat without a accurate, working tachometer.

Even knowing what pitch prop you've been running is little use if you don't know what rpm it's been turning.

Got to agree with this. The Tempest would be the best performer but used Laser II can be had cheap and do OK. 21P should work nicely on that setup, but you really need to get a working tach.
