Prop rubs gear case!

Hi, just replaced lower unit with a used one. After putting the stainless steel prop back on, I notice it rubs the gear case where the prop is closest to the gear case and slides in about 1/4 inch. Thrust washer was put on correctly. The gear case does not seem bent or out of whack at all. I don't have a continuity washer but that is on the nut side and wouldn't affect the position of the prop. My Mercruiser dealer told me I didn't need it on my setup.

Can I just add a 1/8" thick or so stainless steel washer on top of the thrust hub to move the prop away from the gear case. If I pull on the prop just a little it bearly moves and it does not rub. However the more I push on it when turning, the harder it rubs the gear case.
Any help you can give is appreciated.
Chris

Adding another washer might be just be masking a problem. It may be OK and it may not. You need to try and determine what's different about your newer outdrive and your old one before you run it under power. They should be able to use the same prop without any problems if they are set-up correctly.

I bought a used prop on e-bay and when I got it the same thing happened. Apparently Merc. had 2 different thrust washers. The oder style is thicker than the new brass one. I have no idea what the part numbers are but I went to the local marine store and bought the older style and all is OK now!

Don't just add a washer, the thrust hub has a step designed in to keep the prop centered.
See your dealer and get the proper thrust hub for your drive and prop.

Re: Prop rubs gear case!

After removing the prop I noticed it was rubbing on the bearing carrier instead of the gear case. Both of the gear cases were measured and found to be identical. The old gear case has evidence of rubbing on the bearing carrier too. It appears there are at least 2 different thrust washers, one that is 1/2" thick and one that is 3/4" thick. I have the 1/2" and I believe it is the wrong one with this props' drive sleeve. Thanks for your help!
Chris
