J150EXEOM 1995 - How difficult is it to replace the gear case seals? Is total dis-assembly required? Reading my factory manual makes it look like a tough job with lots of specialized tools.

For a competent persons first time in the gear case is this big job?

It's fairly straight forward except for the prop shaft seal which can be done without the special tool but may require pulling the bearing carrier.

The special tool allows you to do the propshaft without removing the carrier.

If you are patient, you can get the seal off without pulling the carrier with a Lisle 58430, then seat the new one with a section of pipe.

a 1995 carrier should come out pretty easy..I use a fly wheel puller with 2 long eye bolts...works like a champ..if its really stuck you may have to get the puller Ezek mentioned..I got a friend who has one..but I think they cost around 75-100. be sure to order a new seal for the gear side of the carrier as well plus the prop seal.

The devices I am referring to allow for the removal of the seal without removing the bearing carrier.

The OEM set for doing that is a tad more than $100. The Lisle 58430 cost around $16.

That doesnt look too bad with the puller. I'll order one.

I've got a high quality flywheel puller set. Just so I'm clear if the bearing carrier needs to come out. It comes out separately from the gear section correct?

Thank you again ezeke and sparky for all your help. Wish I could buy you guys a couple of beers!

The carrier comes out separately and that is not difficult to do, plus it's a good chance to replace the anode that is attached to it.

When you put it back, be sure to use a new o-ring; a little oil or grease will help to seat it properly.

yea that o-ring was what I was talking about..it is on the back of the carrier and seals the outer portion, and order a new anode as well..if you do a pull..good luck
