Re: prop selection please reada and help

ok so ive been reading a lot of things about props and think ive found the answer but they arnt cheap for me and i just need more people to comment
first ill start with my back story to get the full experence im dealing with i bought a 89 concord magnum ss 22 ft (has a cuddy) it had a hole in bottom of boat (major repair) the previous owner gutted it took everything but the gel coat  it was origanlly a outboard engine that had a jack plate bolted on back i also bought a 1990 18ft mariah boat with rotted transom engine is a mercruiser 4.3 with a alpha one 1.84 gear ratio i took everything got it all in the concord i built motor mounts got everything together the carb needs a new float and accelerater pump now after taking it apart blah blah but i was able to do a water test engine running rough so i didnt pay to much attention to rpm i did make it around the lake up on plane my speed wasnt there the boat fought to get up and my wot rpm i noticed was only 3500-3800 i didnt get to see it close enough to pay attention to the actual rpm but i noticed it was low the prop is a 21 pitch prop from the prop selectors i have tried to use by boat length but im confused finding weight cause the nada site says 2300lbs but i dont think thats the outboard included the engine or if thats with out cause price of engine isnt included you have to also go to outboard section to add the cost of engine to boat so im not sure what to do cause one the mercury selector can get it close but i cannot get the year of engine or gear ratio right cause the options arnt in the menu only goes back to 2000 and a gear ratio of 1.81 instead of the book on that year saying 1.84 but id say its a sport boat (its my profile pic plz give me your thoughts on what typ of boat it would be concideredas) cause the cuddy is empty with just a matt unlike a real cuddy the boat is 22ft long and only 175hp with a 2bbl mercarb so it says i need a 14p,15p,or 16p 16p being my top speed prop and 14 for more accel and with low rpm like i have (and runing poorly till i get my carb parts)i would think it would still go to the rpm it supposed to go to even tho running poopy just higher rpm poopy so if you can plz give me and idea of what i should do as far as a prop goes

basicly long story short
16p prop on a 22ft boat for top speed does that sound right
and 14 for hole shot

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... No, it don't work that way,.... Ya gotta get the motor runnin' Right,... 1st....

Then worry about the Prop...

Agreed you do need to be sure the motor is running right. Also be sure the timing is set right and advancing as it should.
I figure the 20ft. outboard with a 4.3 I/O would be about 2150, 1200 plus 950 for the I/O conversion.
Are you sure about your 1.84 ratio Seems numerically high.My info indicates 1.65.
If it is really a 1.84 ratio I feel it should be over revving. with a 21" prop.
It does apopear the 20 foot I/O came with a 260 hp setup. at 2400 lbs. The 175 appeared in the 18 ft.
Does the boat seem to respond to up trim?Or does it seem to lay down like it is glued to the water?
Do you have a hydro foil on the outdrive?
