Prop Shaft nut and ignition

I had an old 1989 Force 125 with a seized piston, so I replaced it with a 1988 Force 125 off ebay.

The problem is, it seems there was a change in the prop shaft nut size during these years. My old 1989 shaft nut is too big, and the new 1988 didn't come with a shaft nut. I've tried looking through the manual for what I need, but I can't decifer all the part numbers.

What prop shaft nut do I need for a 1988 Force 125?

My new motor apparently has a problem with the ignition. I only get spark on the #3 cylinder. I haven't deduced whether it is the trigger or the CDI unit that is causing the problem. Both the 1988 and the 1989 have the blue CDI units, does this mean they are interchangable? I have no reason to suspect that the ignition is bad on the 1989 unit.

Hey wilkin250r
Try checking out this link. They show to many force 125 for your year. What is nice about this site is it actually shows you blow ups of different sections of your motor with numbers. Hope it works for you. I have found parts here people tell me dont exist anymore.

http://www.mercruiserparts.com/SelectModelType3.asp?class_id=2

Re: Prop Shaft nut and ignition

This may seem like a simple trivial question to those that know, but this is my first boat.

How do I decipher the serial number of my outboard? How do I figure out which model I have?

While I'm asking simple questions, where is the serial number on my outboard?

On the older Force motors, the model number holds all the answers.

Yours should look something like this.

1253X8A

The 125 is the hp
The 3 is a code for the features included on that engine.
The X designates which boat manufacturer it was sold to.
THe 8 designates the year, 1988.
And the A designates a production run.

The serial number is just a number, such as 1043.
