Evening all. I have a question for you regarding the propeller shaft on my 1984 merc 75hp (ELPT I believe)
Long story, TL;DR below: Boat is new to me. Had it on the water for the 1st time a couple weeks go. I didn't think to check the lower unit oil (I know, I know) until this last weekend. When I pulled the drain plug I got nothing but water out of it. (literally. no oil.) There was a decent sized glob of metal shavings on the magnet. So I blew it out, filled it with the requisite gear lube, spun the motor a bit by hand, drained the oil, and re-filled it. No metal shavings this time.
The next morning I notice a small puddle underneath the motor. First thought was it was just the remainder of what had ran out of the vent hole as I was filling it. We took it out on the water that day. Just to be double sure, I drained the lube again when I got home and it was milky. (Crap) A minor amount of metal shavings on the magnet. (Not unexpected)
In my futzing around I discovered there is a perceptible amount of side to side play on the prop. In and out it feels solid.
Last bit of back story: I'm reasonably sure the metal is from the shifting pawls/dogs, as I can see where I may have been a little aggressive with my shifting. The mating surfaces of the gears still appear to be in pristine order.
[TL;DR]: I know my shaft seals are crap, so I have those sitting in my shopping cart. My three actual questions:
1) I assume the needle bearing on the prop side of the carrier is the cause of the weeble-wobble in the prop shaft. Would you guys concur? Here's a link to a video showing the play in the bearing: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pLm...ew?usp=sharing
2) I also assume that the jack-wagon that was in this before me tried to get the seals out without removing the carrier. [see pics below] Is this shaft destine for the scrap bin, or do you think it could be rescued with a bit of emery cloth and some spare time? (Or other suggestions)
3) Is there anything else you guys would replace while the lower is apart (save for the usual stuff like the water pump)
Thank you in advance!
