I have a 92 Johnson 48 and was wondering if I could just pull the hub and prop shaft out without dropping the lower unit. Also does anyone know if a 84 evinrude 50 has the same prop shaft as the 48?

You can pull the hub with the lower unit still on. Removing the prop shaft requires removing and disassembling the gearcase. The two motors you mentioned have different prop shafts.

Thanks for the info. I am just trying to get something going. My 84 evinrude just stared making a serious noise as if it were slipping out of gear while going forward and after a few minutes the noise got louder until it would not go anymore except for reverse. I dropped the L U on it and cant get the split rings out. I guess I gotta go to sears and get the right split ring pliers.
