I am installing a prop shaft seal in my 1960 Sea King 5 hp and am not sure which way it should go in.

There is a side that has a flat metal surface and one that has rounder metal edges but mostly rubber visible. The rubber inside is cone shaped with the cone getting smaller on the end that has the flat metal surface.

Should I install the flat metal surface towards the inside of the gear case?

Thank you

Hi Kdc
I would say that the flat metal side faces out. The metal used should be of a non-corrosive type i.e.,bronze,copper,stainless steal,. These seals are plated or covered with rubber sometimes. The inside dosen't need corrosion protection because there is oil in there. I hope this helps.
