See my earlier post, but to recap I need to replace my prop shaft seal and am having some issues due to conflicting info between a mechanic the manual and the actual parts I pulled out of my boat. Basically there are 2 issues:

1. Do I need 1 seal like I pulled off (part number on it was #341281) or 2 like I bought?
Reason I think I need 1:
A. that is what was there
B. the manual shows and refers to one seal (see picture)

Reasons I think I need 2:

A. the mechanic said I did
B. the shape of the bore doesn't look like the single seal would work (see picture of the carrier end and compare to the manual)
C. the one I pulled out was really in bad shape (like it wasn't even supposed to be there in the first place)

2. The mechanic only gave me 1 O-ring. I am pretty sure I needed 2, but he said one was needed. I guess he was wrong?

Here are some pictures to help:

Egg on my face. You have the newer style gearcase with one piece seal.Sorry if I screwed you up.Heres the link to the BRP website that also gives you the parts breakdown. After looking at your old post,it seems the dealer also made a mistake.I think he sold you the wromg seals ,look on the BRP website, link enclosed,it will open at the evinrude parts section, just continue with yr,and HP ,you will find your lower and parts breakdown, they will show 3 different lowers, your is standard, either one will show the parts breakdown

Theres one other possibility, they may have had trouble with the 1 piece and went back to the 2 piece,do you think they fit?I would ask a OMC dealer other than to one you bought the parts from in event he's behind the times

I see the diagram online looks the same as the one in my manual (1 seal). The 2 seals look like they would fit. Also the one picture in the manual with the 7 on it doesn't look like the cross section that is on the end of my carrier. Could I have a older (or newer) gearcase? I actually spoke to another guy about this and he thought that there is 2 seals.

You definatly have a newer gearcase, the one piece seal must be new from the older 2 single seals,if you can measure the seals(2)and they measure the same .Id install them but I would check with pressure. That said, you might want to call around and see if you can get a more definative answer. It appears that around that time there was a change.OR,just get the one piece seal like came out and the BRP website shows as the correct and install it.Might be better piece of mind to put in what came out.I havent checked ,but,I wonder if the prop shaft is the same as the older style gearcase. If so you can figure the inner part of seal size is the same.I dont think the carrier is the same

First you need a sales guy with up to date books. Yes, you need the 341281 seal and 2 O rings for a 1998 200 / 225 standard rotation gearcase. Sounds like your guy is looking at old books and guessing. And just for future reference, you don't need to pull the carrier to replace the seal. The dealer has a tool that can pull & replace the seal in about 15 minutes. In fact it takes longer to get the tool kit out and put it away than it does to replace the seal.

On the other hand if this guy would have done the job he would have probably put the wrong seals back in anyway.

Thanks for the replies. Would the counter rotating gearcase be different? With the 1 piece seal, the one I took out was badly deformed (egged out) and split what would cause this? If it could be shaft misalignment wouldn't there be issues with the bearings beacuse they look fine. Also just wondering how would the tool pull the 1 piece seal out with the shaft in place?

While the carrier and gear set up is much different in a cr gearcase the seal and O rings are the same. As for the seal damage, was there fishing line wrapped around / into the seal? Were the 2 tabs tight or loose?

The removal tool is a cone that fits over the shaft with a bolt in the end. On the seal side there are tapered adaptors used to screw into the seal. Once you have the seal, you turn the bolt on the end aginst the shaft and it pulls the seal out.

I did not see any line. The seal was out of round (elongated) and the side of it was split like it was delaminated. Actually one of the tabs was not really tight, suprisingly it was loose compared to the other one. I will get the seal and see how the install goes.
