Sorry to keep bugging you guys... I do have a manual on order.

anyhow, how do I replace the prop seals on a 1970 100 hp outboard? mdl 100193 c

The parts place tells me there are an outer and inner seal plus an O-ring... about $25 for all three seals.

Re: Prop shaft seals

100193C is in fact a 1971 model

There are two seals (oil retainers )around the propshaft immediately behind the prop and the thrust bush. Look closely as you remove them and fit the new ones in the same way round as the old ones.
There is an O ring that seals the bearing and seals housing into the gearcase itself.

You will find an exploded diagram on the BRP parts list: http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

Re: Prop shaft seals

Before you pull the seals, is the oil leaking black or honey colored? If it's black, it's probably just poorly tuned carbs and too much oil coming out of the exhaust. A tuned 2 stroke only uses about 60% of the oil for lubrication. The rest comes out in exhaust smoke. If you do a lot of idling, then it will be more. Check the lower unit for the oil level and see if it's milky, which means water intrusion. If the leaking oil is amber/clean, then you have leaking shaft seals.

The oil is milky... almost looks good enough to drink.... LOL

There is some black stuff coming out of a different area... a weep hole in the side of the LU. I assume that is exhaust residue.

I just ordered the kit... 20 bucks plus 8 for shipping.... can't believe it. I just paid 25 for two seals and an o-ring at the marine supply locally.

I guess I'll have 2 extra seals now, which can't be a bad thing.
