Hi, I have a 74 50hp Evenrude Outboard on a shallow Fiberglass V bottom boat. The enging sound great. The only problem is the people that had it before put a oversized prop on it. It has a 13.5x15 prop, Because of the prop being to big the boat wont plane at all even with someone sitting on the bow.
My question is any one know what size and pitch prop should be on a motor that size? I dont have a tach on it, so i realy have no idea of where its running at full speed right now, (but from the sounds i can tell you way to low from the one time i took it out so far)
The motor is rated at 50hp at 5500 rpm
I've checked around at the boat shops, and they would be glad to help, but at a price naturaly *lol* I figured i would see what i could learn before i did anything.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Kurt

Howdy Severdsoul.

"Shallow fiberglass V bottom" is not enough information about your boat for us to be of any help.

I think your problem is more likely to be low engine power than prop, unless your boat is a real heavy barge. A 15" pitch is very common on 50HP engines.

Do a search for power loss and verify that your engine is making full power. Bring a cup of coffee.

Let us know what you find.

Good luck :)
