Hi Macbriar
From your info it sounds like the gearbox clutch dogs skipping, you probably feel several points of contact as you rotate the prop with the engine stationary. (however be gentle and rotate prop while engaging gears if the engine is not running, its very bad to change gears with a stationay engine). Normally it is reverse that gives up so you problem may be as simple as a misadjusted gearshift cable or linkage no selecting enough forward movement . Skipping damages the cogs so be sure to resolve your problem now.
Good luck
Sirlespat

Hi

Have you checked if the rubber bushing that connects the prop to the spline is OK?

Hi Sirlespat
Have now taken off the lower unit. When pushing the shift rod into forward gear, it's still slipping. So it sounds like your suggestion of the clutch dog skipping. Is this a big job? I have some mechanical DIY, or do you think I should leave it to the professionals?
Many thanks
Macbriar

Macbrair,

Taking apart the lower unit of these smaller Suzukis isn't that hard. IF yours is like mine you can loosen the two 8 mm nuts that hold the propshaft & propshaft housing in. From there on you will need to fasten a slide hammer puller to get the propshaft housing and propshaft out. OF course you want to drain all the oil first. Once you get the housing out all the gears easily come out and you can inspect the gearcase. I would suggest getting a manual as there are very specific tolerances and play with regards to setting up the gears should you need to dissassemble the setup. I am not an expert at this stuff. I'm not quite clear on your problem though. When my DT 30 is engaged in forward (shut off) I can turn the prop clockwise and I get the click click click sound. If I turn the prop counter clockwise (still in forward gear) I begin pushing the powerhead counterclockwise. For reverse gear there is no click click click. Its solidly engaged either way. I don't know if this helps any. Good luck. YOu can also get a parts blowup of your lower unit from http://www.brownspoint.com . YOu have to register but once you sign in all the parts sheets are at your disposal.

Adam
