Prop speed vs Engine speed

I tried my Wards 35hp Sea King out this week-end and had a problem. I started up, backed up and idled away from the dock without a problem. When I advanced the throttle, the engine RPM increased but the boat moved no faster. It moved only at an idle. I found earlier that the lock nut on the shift rod leading down to the transmission was loose. I tightened it. Could that adjustment cause this problem? Thank you for your help.

Re: Prop speed vs Engine speed

Check that your prop hub is not slipping. Mark the hub against the outside part of the prop where the blades are. Then run the engine, and see if your marks still line up. Out of sight there's a rubber bushing between the two. Eventally the wear out leading to a 'Spun Prop'. A competent prop shop can fix it for you.

If there were a problem with the gearcase or shift-linkage, you'd most likely be getting violent thumping and/or horrible grinding noises. Outboards don't have clutches like a car.
Good luck!

Re: Prop speed vs Engine speed

Paul, Thank you for your help. The prop was indeed spun. I have another prop on and will be leaving for the lake within the hour. Thanks again. Wayne16
