Prop Swap

I've got a question about a prop swap. After the past weeks shifting problems were streighted out, I starting looking at the beat-up, old prop on my motor. It's in pretty bad shape, so I was thinking about swaping it out with the one off my parts motor. I'm running a 1972 Johnson 50hp and the numbers on the prop are as so, 13 3/4 X 15, part #382768. The parts motor is a 73 Evinrude 50hp with the prop numbers 13 3/4 X 15 part #382763. They look about the same except the spare doesn't have the same "foil" over the exhaust end, close but not as big. Any thoughts on switching them out? Thanks, Ross

Re: Prop Swap

Sorry,
I have one more question. I stripped down the spare prop, It had a little paint and a lot of crap on it. I think It's aluminum, I was wondering if I should paint it or not? Would it make any differance? Thanks in advance.

Re: Prop Swap

Sure swap em out, sounds like nearly identical props, if the old one worked the spare should be fine. Most aluminum props are painted for corrosion purposes.

Thanks grandx,

Do you know any tricks to removing the props? The spare came right off, but the prop that is in use is on there pretty good?

Re: Prop Swap

Sounds like prop is corroded in place, I would first remove all hardware, tilt engine and spray shaft with some penetrating oil like WD 40 or something better. Let it sit for a day then try again. I've used a 2x4 between back of gear box and front of prop blade before as a lever to aid in removing stubborn props, pry, rotate to next blade, pry some more, etc, etc. Hopefully between the penetrating oil and prying it will come free. When installing the next one, clean shaft and prop and apply marine grade grease to mating areas before installing, will keep corrosion in check and make it easier to remove next time. Seems someone might make a puller for this similar to a flywheel puller, anyone else?
