Prop too loose?

Hello all,
I have a 1972 Johnson 100 and the big nut that holds the prop on is not even snug. It does have a pin through it. Is this normal? Should I tighten it? Also, if I shut the engine with any forward momentum, I can hear the prop continue to spin.

Thanks a bunch!

Welcome!

There should be a splined spacer between the nut and the prop.

I'm not quite sure if I follow you about the prop spinning but you say if you shut it off while still moving the prop will spin.

Is that what youre saying? Are you shutting it off and leaving it in gear or putting it in neutral and then shutting it off? Why are you shutting it off while youre still moving?

Re: Prop too loose?

Wow thank you for our quick response!

I guess i have shut down in gear and in neutral and you can hear it spin in the boat is still coasting a bit. Or, if the boat is sitting in the driveway, you can grab the prop and spin it.

I guess it doesn't matter if the nut is tight when you are going forward, but I fear it will fly off some day in reverse if the nut is too loose.

Thanks again!

Re: Prop too loose?

With a 1972 100 hp the lower unit will be in forward gear anytime the motor is not running regardless of where the gear selector is.

If you can spin the prop with the motor not running, either something is wrong or its not a 1972.

You are correct on both counts about the prop and the nut. We need the spacer on there.

Re: Prop too loose?

Good morning,

I can only spin it in the "forward" direction if I just walk up to it and spin it. If I spin it the other way, it will not spin.

Either way it sounds like I NEED to get that spacer and maybe snug it up a bit huh?

I have heard some people say that that electrostatic shift takes ATF, and others say that it takes gear grease. Do you know, or should I just pull the plugs and find out?

Probably a good thing to keep maintained right?

Thank you again, I REALLY appreciate your help!

Re: Prop too loose?

jamminmaz

Get the correct spacer(and there is a correct one of the proper thickness) between the prop hub nut and the prop. Usually, the propshaft is notched for this spacer to fit. Maybe yours isn't. Anyway, get the spacer and snug down the nut, put the cotter pin(New One)through it and have fun. There is probably a given torque for the nut, but snugging it down good will surfice for now..
