Prop trade...good deal???

I have a question regarding swapping out a prop. I posted in another post that I have a 92 stratos 274 fs with a 94 Merc XRi 150. The prop that came on the motor when I bought it is a 4 Blade Renegade Bass 13.5x25. When I ran the boat at WOT I was at about 5100-5200 RPMs/55 MPH and very slow to get on plane. It was suggested that I move to a 23p prop.
Now to my question...
I found a 4 Blade Stiletto 13.75x23 at a local shop that they said they would swap with mine plus $50. Both props are in similar condition (few nicks). Since I am new to boating...does this sound like an ok deal and should this prop get me where I need to be with this set up or should I keep looking?

It's really up to you. 2" change in pitch will give you a little more holeshot and you may or may not lose some on the top end depending on your motors WOT RPM range.

If I were to stick with the 25p prop for now, will I being doing something that will cause damage to the motor by running WOT at 51-5200 rpms?

I believe you are at the bottom end of your WOT range so you're not really lugging your engine too bad. Dropping 2" will get you more rpm and better holeshot. Paying $50 for a swap is a pretty good deal. Will he let you try it out 1st?

props are cheap... keep the one you have as a spare and buy another.. offer him $75 cash for the one he has.... walk away when he says no and leave him your number "in case he finds something"

go back the next day when he calls you to buy it lol

He said he wants 200 for the prop because its a 400 dollar prop...problem is Overtons has them for 239 new. I can get a new aluminum on iboats for around 100 and keep the renegade prop for a spare. I just want to make sure I will not be doing any damage to the motor running this prop until then.

OK, you have to decide what you want from a prop. Yes, an aluminum prop will move the boat - no question about it. But, if you're talking efficiency then that's a whole other deal. It's very well known that, in most cases, a Stratos will benifit greatly from a prop with bow lift. Are we shopping price or efficiency?

If I can safely run the prop I currently have for a while without damaging the motor...I am shopping for efficiency. If I have to replace the prop soon...price. I just replaced the motor and this is the prop that came on it. Since I just replaced the motor I don't have the extra money to drop on a ss prop right now.

Your new motor probably came off a lighter boat than you have, and you don't want to lug the engine for too long. What is the spec on the motor max RMP? You will typ increase 200 rpm per 1" of pitch decrease. If your engine runs a max of 6,000, go to a 21P prop; that will increase your RMP the 800 you want. You will get much better hole shot and increase your top end.

Stay with SS if you feel you'll not come into contact with rocks or stumps. If you change to aluminum, you'll need to test the props since you will have more flexing.

Sorry for the expense part of it up front!

Re: Prop trade...good deal???

Everything that I have read says that the rpm range for this motor is 5000-5600. I think one size down to a 23p will get me where I need to be. It just might be a month or so until I can get a new one. I will just try not to run WOT until I change props out I guess. Definitely need to change though if only for the hole shot...it is slow to get up with that large prop.

At this point, you can run WOT with no issues at any RPM. You're not actually lugging it since you are within your "operating window". Time to start posting questions within the outboard section for proper height adjustment of the engine (prop). Your time on plane is your concern and a 1" pitch change will help, but probably not everything you're looking for.

Good luck!
