Prop Turns in Gear

I was just reading where someone said that a prop is not supposed to turn when in gear and the motor is not running. I have a 1995 Mercruiser 3.0L and when I tested this point my prop turned clockwise in Forward and counter-clockwise in reverse. It would not turn the in the opposit direction of the gear I was in. IE... it wouldn't turn counter-clockwise when in forward and clockwise when in reverse. Is the prop really not supposed to turn in either direction when in Forward and Reverse? I would think you would be able to turn it. When I turned mine it would make a small clicking noise about every revolution. Is there something wrong here?

Thanks,

drhunter

No, I think that's completely normal. My Volvo 5.0 SX does the same thing and works flawlessly.

Re: Prop Turns in Gear

to make it simple...if it won't turn one way in fwd and it won't turn the other way in rev and your boat does right in the water... you are okay.

the problem lies when you can turn the prop both ways in gear by hand.
