Prop vibrates when engaged

I have a 98 Ebbtide with an I/O Volvo Penta. It was running fine until I pulled out of my driveway and the out-drive hit the ground. I figured I would loosen the bolts that mount the out-drive to the boat and see it would drop down a tad. I didnt know if when it made contact did it force the outdrive up and put tension somewhere? Any recommendations out there? I would like to see if anyone has a diagram of this outdrive.

Re: Prop vibrates when engaged

chances are the prop shaft is bent......or at least you whacked the prop so bad that one of the blades is folded over.

what bolts did you undo?...are you talking about the bolts that hold your transom plate togeather (bolts from the inside)....if you loosend those off......tighten them or you will cost yourself tons of money....

there are a lot of things you could have done to damage the drive.....lets start at squair one.......take the prop off.....(and with water running to the drive) start the motor and see if the vibration still exists.

Re: Prop vibrates when engaged

Im new to boating so forgive me if I get any of the part names messed up. The bolts that I had loosened were already kinda loose. It didn't take much for me to get them spinning. I tightened them back up though up. As for the Propeller, that never made contact with the ground. The part that hit looks (forgive my lack of terminology) more like an upside down shark fin. Looks like its purpose may be to prevent guys like me from tearing up the prop or act as a rudder. The hard part is it doesnt vibrate out of water. What I could try is pulling the prop off and putting the boat in the water. Ive got a trolling to keep me close by.

The shark fin would be the skeg. Check out skeggard. You should pull the prop and check the run out on the prop shaft... if you are getting a vibration.

Re: Prop vibrates when engaged

Unfortunately it doesnt vibrate out of water. I did pull the prop and engaged the drive. Held a wrench to the side of the shaft as it was spinning and it felt really smooth. No run out. I know there are a number of things that could possibly go wrong. I was wondering if when it hit, did it force the outdrive up and put pressure on the shaft thats connected the the engine? Is that a possibility? Or is there enough of a tolerance between the joints/gears to not have this issue?

You could pull the drive and check ujoints and gimbal bearing. Also yoke shaft. I wouldn't think you hurt anything in there but who knows?
