I recently bought an 89 Skeeter bass boat 16 ft with 110 Johnson.I have been doing a ton of needed work on it and will be looking to get a new prop for it.I have only looked quick to find some sort of ident # on it but don't seem to find one.I have read alot in this forum about new prop selection and know there is certain info needed to start process, top speed and rpm's etc,but wonder if i can atleast start research process without that info(size, pitch, type etc).I have manual for motor but can't find original prop size for a place to start, just replacement sizes and disassembly, assembly etc.All i could find through iboats is.
Specs-
89 Johnson 110
Thru hub exhaust and 13 tooth spline V4 gearcase
WOT rpm 4500-5500
As you can probably tell i am kind of new to all this and find alot of prop selection kind of confusing. The boat will only be used for fishing(no skiing, etc).
Normally, will only be two people in the boat at one time and normal gear.Again i am only looking to just start the research process and hope i provided enough info for a little input form from you guys
Thanks John......

Do you know what pitch the prop is?, this is very important, if the pitch is too low the engine will over rev, if too large the engine will not easily reach Wide Open Throttle which is important for various reasons not least of which is fuel economy.

Re: Prop ?? where to start?

The main problem just to get started(researching) is i need to find out what size etc the original one on the boat now is.Boat is stored in garage for winter and i don't have much room to get a better look to find any ident #'s.I 'm going to pull it out today and get a better look for that.Again i understand i will need other info for you as stated above and for you guys.Another dumb question is if there are no ident #'s on it how do i know exactly what is is.Will also check diameter.
Thanks for your patience and help....John

Re: Prop ?? where to start?

Check for numbers on barrel of the prop also look under the prop nut.
if no numbers are present a prop shop can measure it.
While checking note if the antivent plate (just above the prop) is even with the bottom of the boat.that is considered a starting point usually the motor can be raised from there.Usually raise a hole at a time to a point just before venting becomes a problem.Under ideal conditions a couple of mph can be gained.Be sure it pumps water. If prop is dinged up now is the time to have it repaired.
A stainless prop will generally improve overall performance. There are also aluminum props that produce near stainless performance at aluminum prices.
Hustler is one You might do some research on these type props. These props will usually allow even more height for the motor.Generally when making changes do one type change at a time.ie:don't change height and prop at the same time.Get the best setup with your existing prop then consider a prop change from there.

Re: Prop ?? where to start?

Thanks.I am going to pull boat out here shortly and will check these things.Prop is pretty beat up, as i am sure it is original prop, 1989,which is main reason for wanting to change it.Will keep for spare.
Will check your suggestions and let you know.
Thanks again John....

Re: Prop ?? where to start?

Took good look at prop and all i could find for markings were the name Shwarts on one side and Propco with some numbers or letters after it, pp, tt or ff to worn to tell exactly what it was.If i pull it and take it to local marina can they measure and tell size and pitch, just so i'll have somewhere to start.
Thanks John.......

Yes a prop shop can help size it.A marina isn't likely to be able to help though they may have a shop they deal with. Also there may be numbers under the prop nut.The prop shop may be able to repair the prop so you have a good prop to start with.If a prop change is later suggested you will have the repaired one for a spare.

Re: Prop ?? where to start?

Steelspike, you were right,i pulled the prop and they were right behind prop nut plain as day.
propco-17S
J2-17SP.
As it turns out i called a guy i know that owns a fabricating shop and reconditions old props but also does alot of new prop work with boat owners(didn't know that part).Tells me its a 13 1\4 with a 17 pitch. So now i can atleast look into types of new props and prices etc, winters are very long here in upstate NY,some else to do for winter project. He also suggested a couple of things about new props,he lets you demo them until he gets you dialed in on the right one,but that will have to wait until spring and i get the boat back in the water and get accurate wot and rpms and all that.Anyway thanks for everyones help again!!!!!
Thanks John....
