ok all I know about props are they go bump in the night. I have a 50hp outboard Johnson 2-stroke on a 24 foot pontoon boat. Prop is dinged up pretty good, Ive looked all over It and cant find any numbers at all, I picked up a 13 3/4" x 15 today at the marina. I figured it will be a staring point. would like someone with experience teach me what to look for and observe to find out if it is the right prop or know what to look for to figure out which one will be. Thank You.

So in a nutshell, the two numbers on the prop are the diameter (1st number) and the pitch (second number) of the prop. Ideally, you want a prop with the same diameter as the one that was previously on the motor...assuming that was a good fitting prop. There are no numbers anywhere on the old prop? On the hub? Under the nut? On the side of prop? They may be hard to read or see, but there should be a number somewhere. Can you take some pics of the old prop?

Once you find one that is the correct diameter for the prop shaft (the 13 3/4 number on your new prop) the correct pitch is determined by the WOT rpm's of your boat with the prop compared to your motor's recommended max rpm's. As a general guideline, each inch you change the pitch of a prop, your motor will lose or gain about 200 rpm's. If you go down in pitch one inch (from 15 to 14) you would gain around 200 rpm's to your WOT rpm's. If you go up an inch (from 15 to 16) you would lose about 200 rpm's from WOT rpm's. Ideally, you would like the boats WOT rpm's to be as close to--without going over- your motors recommended WOT rpm. Make sense?

Just a first glance observation, that 15 pitch prop on a 50hp for a Pontoon is probably too much pitch. My guess is, after running it and seeing what it does on the Pontoon, that you will end up with a 10 to 12 pitch prop in order to get the wide open throttle (WOT) RPM's in the proper operating range for that engine.

Good luck!

Without an installed tach whichever prop is selected will be a night shot. Need OB to rev to max factory stated wot rpm as usually loaded for OB to rev happily when full throttle is applied.

I do have factory tach in good working order. Also a quick observation is that the 13 3/4" prop is too large diameter to fit anyways, so it wont be going on. I'm returning it, but going to look at original prop a little closer for numbers tonight.

Ok found number on my old prop, down inside hub. it is a 13x11. I'm returning the 13 3/4 x 15 and getting another 13x11. Presently its running about 5900 rpm WOT. The old prop is really worn and beat up so I'm banking on an actual 13x 11 will bring it down a bit. the diameter measures about 12 1/4 from the tips being dinged up and worn. I believe this to be the original 2001 prop.

If max wot revs are 6K for that OB and achieved 5900 wot rpm, OB is already at the near max wot rpm range as currently loaded. If max wot rpm range is 5500, OB is over revving...
