prop ?

My friend has a 182 ranger redman series....i think....anyway it is a 18' one. He has a 150 johnson on it. Right now it has a 26 or 27 pitch 4 blade that is 13.5"on it. It WILL NOT come up on plane without a LOT of trouble. With three big guys you have to walk to the front to get it to plane out!!!!! He wants a new boat and I keep telling him he has a good boat but just needs a new prop. What size prop and which one would you guys reccoment?<br /><br />thanks<br />longshot

The prop size will be the one that puts him in the correct rpm range.<br /><br />What year is the motor?<br /><br />What rpm will it turn now with an average load?<br /><br />It may be a prop issue or it may be a set up issue.

I think it is like 3800rpm. The motor is a mid 80's model. with just two people and trimmed all the way down it stands up and takes about 50 yards to plane out.<br /><br />longshot

I know that you will not be able to give the ideal prop without seeing the boat and running it, etc, etc. I was just looking for a size to start at........educated guess based on your experience.<br /><br />thanks<br />longshot

3800 RPM! That's about 1700 rpm too little.<br /><br />That engine should be able to turn at least 5500 with an average load. A 26" pitch prop is WAY too steep for that boat.<br /><br />As a general rule, every inch in prop pitch is worth about 200 rpm. In you case, I would think a prop in the 17" to 20" pitch range may be a better choice to start with.
