I fired my 1966 95 hp 6 cylinder Mercury Krakhauer up today for the fist time this spring in hopes to do some pike slaying tomorrow. When I hit the throttle in the yard to make sure she ran (with water being pumped into it) I looked back at the prop and it was bearly spinning and then the prop and the whole shaft assembly fell out onto the ground. There was a nut from the shaft coming into the housing from above that had fallen off. I put that back on, but can't figure out how you connect the prop shaft back into there. any ideas on what i need to do to fit it back in? It thanks for your time and good luck fishing!!!

Re: propeller and shaft dropped out on the ground!!!!

Hi Dan,
Was the motor properly winterized? I ask, because if there was water in there, it may have popped the rear spanner nut out. The spanner nut holds all the guts in place. If this is the case you would have gotten the reverse gear and carrier with it.
As a second theory, did the entire propshaft come out? It should be at least a foot long with a hole in the forward tip. If you only got an 8-inch chunk, I suspect your propshaft may have sheared off.
- Scott

there's a cross pin that holds the propshaft into the sliding clutch and a spring around the outside of the clutch to hold in the cross pin...sounds like you sheared the cross pin-just a guess

Re: propeller and shaft dropped out on the ground!!!!

Is it just the shaft that came out or did the rear carrier and reverse gear come with it? I can't understand how just the propshaft could come out, as the propshaft has several areas on it that are larger diamater than the reverse gear and rear carrier bearings. That whole assembly must come out to get the propshaft out... If that's the case, then you must have lost or broken the rear spanner nut at some point...

- Scott

Perhaps the spanner nut broke when you hit the prop on the driveway? How is the housing? Cracked? Any sign of the spanner nut? It is like a ring with threads on the outside and notches around one side.
