Hi all, the Prop on my Evinrude 115HP has a few chips, no more than three, total an inch long, by 1/8" deep in one of the vents. Do I need to replace the entire thing? If I do not, should I file them down so that it is a smooth line?

Thanks

MAX

I would assume its an aluminum prop. If so, I'd have it fixed at a prop shop and keep it as a spare for the ss prop I would buy.

Thanks guys. If I cannot afford to replace the prop, should I file/sand it even?

No. Doing what you're asking can also throw it off balance.

Rebuilding a prop is usually much cheaper than a new one.

All local dealers (marine) are hooked up with prop shops. Any can give you a ballpark for rebuild.

Just for kicks, what size is it?

just do not file it and use it with out getting it fixed.it is cheaper to wait and save for a new prop then a new lower unit.price them and see.good luck

The diameter and pitch is usually stamped on the hub.

Re: Propeller is chipped

just curious what the benifit to one over the other is.

for an outboard application.

I have an aluminum thats chipped- just like the above prop-

so I switched with the prop on the spare motor that was brass, heavy and in nice shape.

I was wondering what the difference was- did you increase horse by going to a lighter aluminum prop? Durability and cost?

I thought there may be a prefrence or benifit to useing one over the other.

Tuck-

Re: Propeller is chipped

Frankly, if you don't hit a lot of sand/rocks when boating, I *highly* recommend a stainless prop, one size pitch deeper.

For example, I had a 19' Caravelle with 302 and it came with a trashed aluminum prop. Two more Al props later, I bought this composite POS with replaceable blades. Then, at the advice of my local prop shop, I ponied up the $$$ for a nice stainless and HOLY COW my top end saw another 9mph. A year of running that and it looked brand-new, no nicks or anything.

When I get the money ($135) I'm getting one for my 9.9.
