Same 3hp Evinrude 1968, was looking at the propeller and noticed that it does not seem to be attached tight, there is actually some play there - is that normal or am i missing a bushing or something that would holt it on tight?

Re: Propeller Loose?

There will be a liitle play but it should not be excessive.

Take a look.
The hole in the shaft for the drive pin may have become enlarged, (not a lot you can do there short of replacing the shaft!) or the slots in the hub my be enlarged. (You'll have to judge if it requires attention but it would be possible to cut new ones at right angles to the originals I think.
The bush between the hub and the prop may be on its last legs. renew!

DIGRAM HERE hopefully the right one!

Re: Propeller Loose?

actually I took it apart today to look to see if anything was missing and I don't think any parts are missing. I looked at the propeller nut - and the cotter pin is weighted more to one side than the other so, flip it around and most of the play is gone. It is still a little loose, but as long as all the parts are there I'm good. it still is not tight to the shaft, but I don't think it ever has been. Should it be tight on there? I could just add a couple washers. Is that a bad idea?
