propeller shaft play ??

what i have is a 86 40 hp johnson , it was last registered in 93 and was supposedly running when put up (not stored properly i believe. ) been sitting with motor out of water ever since. drained the l/u oil and all looked good . no frags ,no milkiness. mabey a drop of water when i pulled the lower plug (it was like opening an old coke bottle psstt. anyway i didnt want to get into the gears , i just wanted to rebuild the pump. how much play should there be in the propeller shaft .1 got about 1/16th of an inch ,clymer manual S*&^S. wished i would seen your advice and got a real service manual. sry fer my ramblin but its friday night and ive had a few bl's .
