Propeller spins in nuteral

I have not got to test the motor in water yet (fixing a bad carb) but when I had my 1987 9.9 running I noticed the prop would spin while in nuteral. Now when I put it into forward or reverse ther was no clunk sound but it seemed positive and the prop would really spin fast then. Is it normal for the prop to spin slowly in nuteral while out of the water and using muffs? Also should I be hearing that clunk sound while putting into forward and reverse? It just seems to have a positive click but that is about it.

If the motor is not in the water it would be normal to have the prop rotate a little bit. I also believe a slight "clunk" while shifting would be normal.

Normal, oil in gearcase is moving and with no resistance on the prop, it turns, slowly, in water too

Yep. It will spin both in water and out when in neutral, as said above. It's normal. I always get a clunk (not a noise, but a feel) when I shift into F or R, I assume it's the gears going in.

Thanks for the replies, now that I got the carb fixed and know nothing is wrong with it spinning in nuteral I feel really good about how well it runs. Now if our river wasn't flooded  I would go see how it works on the boat.
