As this is copied from Wordperfect 10, it didn't format perfectly, I apologize for that...the prop, manufacture, rpm and speed are listed after each prop and if you read carefully, you can extract those numbers.
I hope this is of some use to all who read it. I learned many things about blade design during this testing and some designs are just not suited for some applications, but I did get a very good feel of how each design performs and where it is best suited.
If you have any questions, please, ask away.
Remember, these are all SS props.

PROPELLER TEST RESULTS
FOR 3-BLADE STAINLESS, THRU-HUB EXHAUST DESIGNS.

BY KENNY SANDERSON
2 PROPELLER DESIGNS WERE THE FOCUS OF THIS TEST
#1. Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Max RPM with my 200???I don't know for sure, but the book says 5750. It was built to take whatever I give it... :D
Copy what you'd like. That's why it's here.
Always keep in mind, each prop will react differently on my hull, than it may on yours.

Thanks kenny,i figure the 200 would do whatever you wanted it to.

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Very impressive, Walleyehed! More than 40 different props listed. I don't think I have seen such a comprehensive prop test published anywhere on the net, and certainly not by a qualified & unbiased third-party tester. This really ought to be published properly.

Anyway, thank you for your generosity in sharing this.

It was fun...
Come spring, I have a few others to run that aren't out yet, so we'll see what next year brings.

Awesome stuff! This obviously took a lot of work and a decent amount of time too! I'm sure it will be very helpful to many :)

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Are there any Prop-Finder in the net for my 40HP Mariner on 15foot Runabout?

I realy would like to upgrade to a bigger boat, but my garage is too smal.

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Got a Boat, the best prop finder is a tachometer.
We need to know what the recommended RPM range of the engine is, and what The actual RPM is with the prop you have now.

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Kenny;

Nice Job! And lot's of work. The members should be greatfull to have this info.

I noticed that you ran the test with the Mobster Tabs (Smart Tabs) working. Given the current and popular thinking that Props are the sole answer to boat performance ( I know you do not think this way), I was wondering why you did not run the boat with the Mobster Tabs disconected (non functional? I would suspect that the results would have been significantly different.

Actually I would like to see the difference between the best performing props without Mobster Tabs and with Mobster Tabs. See, once you start something it seems to never end. I am not suggesting more work. You have already put in many hours on this project. Regards

JOhn

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

You bring an excellent point to the table here, John, and as I think about it, yes, it would be interesting to know those differences, and when I get the chance, I will run several of the props I still have without the Tabs and see what we get. I need more excuses to get on the water anyway!

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

walleye- not to be confrontational here but according to your own test results, the Merc props seemed to outperform most others. Your comments?

UFM82

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

One manufactures prop that I tested outran everything I tested and posted, but, the manufacturer asked that I not include that prop for reasons beyond my control.
If you will notice, the Turbo1's and 2's were very close in the High performance props and the Tempest 23P was only .3mph faster than the Turbo1 in a 21P!!!!
In the heavy load tests, the Solas props get the edge...
I have nothing against Mercs High performance props, the Tempest in particular.
Although I cannot tell the pitch and diameter, but I can tell you nothing, and I MEAN NOTHING will touch a Turbo TXP for speed in a given pitch range. The Tempest is a grea PROP, available in many sizes and uses the flo-torqII hub to fit about anything, but you won't find a discount price on a Merc prop, nor will you find a Merc prop that will leave a TXP Turbo. Now, I'm not saying go put a TXP on something that doesn't respond well to over-all lift, and the prop must surface for best results, but then ALL high performance props I tested run best through the surface, indicating they are not very good sterndrive props...thats where the Lexor, Mirage, Vengeance, some of the MWC props come in to play.
Merc SS...Great props in their high-end designs.
Please keep in mind this test was only for 3-bld SS thru-hub.
If things come together for early spring, I hope to have some testing lined up for 4-bld SS.

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Hi Kenny,

Phew man you've been busy.

Couple of questions with regard to your initial testing for the High End Performance Boating runs:

Your comment: "Although I cannot tell the pitch and diameter, but I can tell you nothing, and I MEAN NOTHING will touch a Turbo TXP for speed in a given pitch range." This raises a couple of questions:

You had a 6" jack plate. You have said that Turbo1 runs better than others jacked up. Well what can you say about it before you bring the prop out of the water? Like I have a fixed transom mount and my cav plate is 1" above the bottom of the boat.

I'm currently running a Ballistic 13( ) x 21 and I think I am getting real good bite with my aluminum padded bass boat; really fast hole, excellent med rpm to WOT acceleration, what I think is real good bite in turns, (doesn't blow out even on goosing in the turn, revs, but doesn't loose speed...just the opposite) and real good top end.

My WOT rpm's are still above 6000 and WOT rating is 5000 to 5500 so I am shopping for a prop cause I don't like running around with the throttle sitting at 3/4 wide open....to get the 5500 and the engine sounds much smoother where it is supposed to run.

From playing with the prop calculator, it looks like my 49mph is about all I am going to get from this rig. Propping up will only drop the rpm's, not necessarily add much to the top speed, unless in doing so (propping up), the hull lifts more and the drag drops causing the slip to drop.

Next. I was really impressed with your data about heat and low fuel consumption with regard to low rpm's. I don't know what your WOT engine rating is, but you ran from 6350 down to about 5000.....quite a range.

You know, you "old timers" on here keep harping about lugging a 2 cycle. Well here you showed us why. I'm assuming the the high temp relates to baking oil on pistons, rings, and cylinders, requiring decarb and all, not to mention poor fuel economy. This should be a real heads up for everyone reading it that has a boat; especially a heavy one.

I'm convinced by what you say, as my engine is getting super fuel economy and carbon doesn't seem to be a problem (although I have started adding Sea Foam to my gas).

Thanks for the input. I know it will help a lotta folks in their propping decisions.

Mark

Re: PROPELLER TEST RESULTS.

Kenny, I'm glad you mentioned that there is a distinction between the props you tested and their application, and props for stern drive use. I was wondering if there is any data on specific through hub exhaust prop brands/models tested for stern drive applications or are you just familiar with design characteristics that make certain props more suitable for stern drives. Specifically for brands you mentioned on1/17/06. Thanks
