Propeller turning in nutral

Hi guys. This might be a stupid question, but when I put my outboard into nutral, the propeller still turns...is this normal? How does nutral differ from Forward?

Does it turn slow or does it turn like it is still in gear? It might just need some kind of adjustment. I take it that you have noticed this while out of the water or did you notice this while in the water?

It turns like its in gear... i tried it out in the bin full of water in my driveway....I just got this motor ...and as far as i know they arent supposto turn.... when they are in neutral rite?

Did you have the control box hooked to the motor? What size, year, and make motor are we talking about?

No it shouldn't turn like it is in gear while in neutral, that is why I'm thinking something is out of adjustment or maybe worn in the lower unit.

Lets get these other guys input.

This is a 1976 7.5 Hp Mercury. I think when i was taking off the lower unit I misaligned the shift rod.

Something could of happened when you took the lower unit off and did what you had to do, have you had the motor running before you done the work on the lower unit?

There still should be a little bit of adjustment to play with where your shift lever is, I could be wrong. If there is adjustment available at the shift lever then I would mark the spot that it is in now then adjust from there.

So it will go in to reverse but just not into neutral?

Again lets let these other guys jump in. Don't know if the clutch dog would have those symptoms or what.

Ya. Thanks for your replies. Do you know where I can find a diagram or something similar that shows me how the shift rod actually shifts gears in the gear case on these motors?
