When we shut off the engine on a 94 Force 90, it continues to make a noise. rrrrrrr rrrrrr rrrrrrr rrrrrr...lol, sort of like that. Seems like it goes on until the propellor stops. It just started doing that last week. We did notice a nick in the propellor. Any ideas or suggestions?

Are you shutting it off in gear? Try putting her in Neutral first.

The noise sounds like your dog clutch over-running with the engine in gear and stopped.

Hubby says he's not shutting it off in gear, although I do know that he did at least once. Anything else it can be?

How about a little more info?

Did this "noise" just start?
Have you had the motor long or is it new to you?

Has he checked the gear lube in the lower unit?
Is it full?
Is it contaminated with water or metal shavings?
Is it marine grade gear lube?

HAs he tried turning the prop by hand with the engine off?
Any noises when he does this?

Yes, noise just started this last week while on vacation. Motor is new to us, but have had it about 3 months. The boat place checked something about the fluid and said it was fine. Yes, when he turns the prop with the engine off it makes a noise. The boat place said it was nothing to worry about, but it sounds terrible when we shut the engine off.

Sounds to me like the shift rod is out of adjustment.

If it makes noise when stopping the engine in neutral, the prop is not fully disengaged.

If you get the opportunity, try stopping the engine in reverse, just to see if it will make the noise.

I would buy a Clymer Force repair manual and make the adjustment to the shift rod. It is outlined in detail on pages 475-476.
